RENEW & REJOICIFY

I’m writing this on the heels of a blizzard, post our whirlwind Los Angeles getaway, all while longingly looking ahead to the 60-70° weather in the forecast. One thing is certain: false spring has arrived. But that also means that spring is just around the corner. In like a lion, out like a lamb? Fingers crossed!

Over the last few years, I’ve grown from dreading the mucky mess of melting snow to appreciating & looking for the small signs of renewal. For me now, March signals a fresh start as the world wakes up from winter. We spring ahead. The days get longer. The air feels lighter. And nature comes back to life. From robins returning to cherry blossoms blooming, it’s a time to reset, refresh, and welcome the new season with open arms. Spring reminds us that change is natural and renewal is always possible.

Personally for me, the spring equinox is the true beginning of the year where balance is restored and light overtakes the darkness. It’s a time to set intentions, to plant seeds (literally and metaphorically), and to move forward with clarity. Winter was for resting and reflecting. Now, as the light shines through, it’s time to step into action.

Here are a few ways to bring that mindset into your everyday routines this month:

Set intentions. Think about how you want to feel this season & into the new year. What small shifts can help you get there? There’s no day like today to begin again! (I’m a pen-on-paper kinda planner and this year I invested in a new A5 binder & inserts to help me stay organized and on track as well as plan big dreams for the future. And with the current political, cultural & tech climate, I’ve been craving all things analog, so I splurged on extras like financial, meal & travel planners as well as shopping & wish lists to get that information out of Notes & Sheets and onto physical paper.)

Clear out the stagnant energy. Pull back the curtains, open the windows, and give your home a breath of fresh! Do a deep clean—not just of your space, but of your routines and your mindset, too. What habits are no longer serving you? What do you want to make more room for? (I love the return of those first few warm days where I can open the windows & air out our space. There’s nothing quite like letting a cool spring breeze wash over you that instantly makes you feel better. Additionally, I’ve been finding comfort in the words of Brianna Wiest having listened to several of her audio books. I currently have her collection in my cart with a plan to start “The Pivot Year” with the spring equinox, visit a page a day & reflect on her prose.)

Welcome color & vibrancy. Winter is all about coziness and layers, but now is the time to brighten things up. Swap those heavy wool knits for lighter cottons & linens. Add fresh florals or stems to your space. Switch up your wardrobe with softer tones. (I’m big on minimal closets & capsule wardrobes and have lived with such for the last ten years. Post-pandemic, my closet shrunk to a minuscule amount and so this year, I’m rediscovering my style & filling in gaps with thrifted items. After several years of black, one of the things I’m most excited to bring to my spring/summer closet is a collection of lighter tones: blush, sage, cream & chambray as well as patterns like stripes & florals. We know, we know: Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking.)

Celebrate the little things. The first day you can leave the house without a coat. The smell of rain on warm pavement. The first sip of an iced latte after months of hot drinks. Let yourself find joy in the transition. (For me, it’s always seeing the dance of robins at the park across the street & listening to sweet bird song in the morning.)

Move with the season. Longer days mean more time to be outside. Take a morning walk, stretch in the sunshine, or start your garden prep. Even small moments outdoors can help you feel more in tune with the shift. (While in LA, we logged something like 15 miles walking over the course of two days. Wandering while on vacation is one of my favorite ways to explore a new locale, yet it’s always wild to me how much more I move compared to my daily life and it’s always a goal of mine to add more of that into my daily routine. This year I’m looking forward to expanding my garden & landscaping and exploring the new walking/biking trail that connects our neighborhood to the nearby lake.)

Refresh your rituals. Just like nature, we aren’t meant to stay the same year-round. What do you want more of this season? Maybe it’s slowing down in the mornings, adding a new hobby, or making space for spontaneity. Let yourself evolve. (For 2025, I chose as my word of the year: Rooted. This word holds so much meaning to me in this moment. I choose to be rooted, that is: deeply connected to my values, my heritage, my home, my community, and myself. This word will guide me as I honor tradition while making space for growth, cultivate a home that nourishes the soul, and embrace a slower, intentional way of living.)

Spring is an invitation to begin again—to embrace change, breathe deeper, and find joy in the process. However you welcome the season, make it feel good for you.
